National Andy Griffiths Kids Short Story competition winner announced
Local Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School student, Jackson O’Shea, 9, has been named the winner of the third annual national Andy Griffiths Kids Short Story competition.
After sorting through an overwhelming number of entries from across Australia, Dymocks and bestselling Australian children’s author Andy Griffiths were pleased to announce Jackson as the winner of the writing competition with his work titled Giant Zombie Rat.
Jackson, in Year 4 grade at school, will have his winning story illustrated by Andy Griffith’s renowned illustrator, Terry Denton and will receive an Andy Griffiths Book Collection containing a total of 21 books.
According to his mother, Angela, Jackson was very excited and gracious when he was told that he had won the Andy Griffiths writing competition.
“Jackson really enjoys creative writing and was very excited to be handpicked to win by Andy Griffiths and to have his story illustrated by Terry Denton,” said Angela.
“His inspiration for the short story came from one of his teachers who brought her pet rat into class a few times. He’s wanted a pet rat since, so I’m glad he’s chosen writing as an outlet to express this wish!
“Jackson wants to be a famous comic book writer and has starting a club with his friends from school. I’m so proud to see him win this competition as he’s really developed a passion for reading and writing,” concluded Angela.
Judged by Andy Griffiths himself, the competition called for budding young writers up to the age of 12 years to write a poem or short story with a theme and genre of their choice.
“We were thrilled to see the high standard of short stories from children of all ages across the country,” said Andy Griffiths.
“Jackson’s winning entry Giant Zombie Rat was truly imaginative and creative. We hope the competition inspires Jackson and other young children to continue reading, writing and develop a real passion for storytelling,” concluded Andy.
One of Australia’s most popular children’s writers, Andy Griffiths’ has sold over five million books worldwide and has featured on the New York Times bestseller lists. With over 40 Australian Children’s Choice Awards to his name, Andy Griffiths’ latest novel The 13-Storey Treehouse is the basis for this year’s theme in the popular writing competition.
